Disability Equality Training (DET) is a way of teaching how to treat disabled people equally with non-disabled people.
DET Training from TranscriptionsUK will include our professional trainer looking at the ways in which you can change how you do things so that you are not discriminating against disabled people.
They may take you through the following:
History of Disability
- Stories from fairy tales like Hansel and Gretel where the witch is deformed, blind, ugly and disabled with a stick
- Exploring the Myths such as: Disabled people are always sick?
The Disabling World
- The physical environment (doorways, height of counters etc)
- Information (the written word or alternatives, such as electronic information)
- Communication barriers (face to face, sign language interpreters)
- Attitudes (staff attitudes toward disabled people, making assumptions, stereotyping and prejudice)
Policies and Procedures
(these are known as organisational barriers such as: Providing a service which disadvantages people such as the "No Dogs Allowed" policy)
Responsibilities of the Service Provider
- Legislation and Duties - What the DDA requires of your business or service. How to implement the changes
- What does the Act Do?
- Definition of the Act
- What is 'Discrimination'?
- Who is covered by the Act?
Communicating with Disabled People
- Etiquette
- Do's and don'ts when talking to disabled people
- Different forms of communication

- Things to look for and think about so that you are accessible to all disabled people
